Transforming Education in Ecuador

Project Renaissance collaborates with the Interoceanica Educational Network to enrich the education of children in the rural area of Quito, Ecuador. Educational technologies including right brain education, Montessori, Doman, Reggio Emilia, Step 2, Virtues and Values, among others, whose validity for children has been proven, are applied along with games, concepts, purpose and objectives specific to encourage the optimal education and growth of each child.

About our Schools

Our schools encompass preschool through 12th grade. Many classrooms have up to 34 students with one teacher. There are a total of 1,423 children served by these schools. Many of the children are malnourished, some have behavioral or discipline problems, some have learning problems and some are without families.

The teachers need assistance and additional training. The children need school supplies, educational materials and more space. All eight of the schools that we work with are in the rural district near Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The schools have been in existence for 20 to 80 years each. Below is a map of the location of the schools.

Our Educational Methods

The Renaissance project is a sustainable project of educational support providing information and training for the teachers in our eight rural schools. In addition to this training, one of the project’s objectives is to provide sufficient educational materials so that the teachers have the necessary tools for their classrooms. There will also be a follow-up to assess the effectiveness of the teacher-training.

The Renaissance Project also offers support and personal counseling for parents who wish help with anything related to the welfare and formation of their children. Finally, we provide instruction and coaching for school cooks to enhance the nutritional value of daily meals prepared for the children at schools.

Teacher Training and Educational Material Assessment

• Presentation of information and practical techniques to increase teacher self-awareness and understanding, for the purpose of improving teaching performance in the classroom
• Advanced educational techniques and exercises to develop the right-brain creative potential of the child, and to harmonize the right and left brain connections that will enhance the ability to learn
• Evaluation of classroom needs and the provision of adequate materials for traditional, Montessori, and Right-Brain education
• Teach a series of 26 simple exercises known as Brain Gym that stimulate whole brain integration through coordinated bodily movements

Parent Training

• Teaching of practical parenting skills, including communication and interaction, appropriate discipline, and a better understanding of different temperaments and child personalities
• Coaching parents to identify and choose appropriate solutions for specific academic problems children are experiencing
• Consultations for parents of children who are experiencing difficulty with social skills, negative attitudes, rebellious behavior, etc.
• Basic course in nutritional knowledge and meal preparations
• One-on-one training for parents that want to accelerate their learning in any of the above areas
